Diaspora:  What happened after Görlitz?

Tuesday June 20, 2023
Location: Kulturforum Görlitzer Synagoge
Time: 19:00

World War II caused massive change across the globe.  No international community was affected as much as the Jews.

What was life like for these former Görlitzers in their new homelands?

This is what we aim to discuss on this special evening, in conversation with visiting Jewish Görlitz descendants and world experts on the subject.

Meet the Experts:

Dr. Barbara Warnock-  The Wiener Holocaust Library

Dr Barbara Warnock is a Course Tutor at the Institute of Continuing Education, University of Cambridge and the Education and Outreach Manager for The Wiener Library, where she researches and develops exhibitions drawn from the Library’s unique collections of material on the Nazi era and the Holocaust.

Recent exhibitions she has curated or co-curated include A Bitter Road: Britain and the Refugee Crisis of the 1930s and 1940s and On British Soil: Victims of Nazi Persecution in The Channel Islands. She also develops workshop programmes for schools, undergraduates and post-graduates, and has given many talks on the themes of refugees to Britain and topics relating to the Holocaust.

She was a history teacher and examiner for many years and has also been an undergraduate tutor at Birkbeck College, University of London. She uses a range of media in her teaching and encourages independent thought and critical thinking in her students.

She is currently using The Wiener Library’s archives to research and curate an exhibition to be held at the Library entitled London 1938: Defending ‘Degenerate’ German Art, which will examine an exhibition held in London in 1938 on twentieth century German art. The 1938 exhibition showcased work by artists being persecuted by the Nazi regime.

She is also engaged in researching a future exhibition on a German émigré photographer who established their studio in London in 1933. And has recently prepared a chapter drawn from her PhD research on post-First World War Austria for an edited volume, and is in the process of preparing a book prop
